Big Ben

Big Ben, a four-faced clock tower that stands three hundred and sixteen feet high, is one of London’s most well known landmarks. Big Ben features a 13-ton hour bell that began ringing in 1859 from its location at Westminster Palace. The clock faces are illuminated in the evenings and a light shines over the clock during Parliament sessions. Here is some information about Big Ben that is useful for visitors and residents of London:

–The clock is named for commissioner of works Sir Benjamin Hall, who oversaw the installation of the hour bell in 1856. Big Ben has stopped working very infrequently over the last century and a half and is very accurate in regard to the time.
